Porthmeor  Studio 5

In June 2024,  my practice rellocated to St Ives in the setting of a residency between the Porthemor studios and Freeland Foundation.  In this month, was completed the Manual scroll project which combines a  10 meter long painting , preparatory drawings, photography works and a short film.

The Manual Scroll

Is a self standing part steel part wood structure which accommodates paper or canvas in the shape of a roll. The painting is tensioned between two cages and activated by a handle on the top right.

The hardwood base is used as support for the structure as well as carrier once the structure is dismantled. When the motion is activated, the image  moves from left to right acting as a screen.

St Ives Painting, 2024. Acrylic on canvas supported by steal cages, 1000 x 160 cm

The painting

The painting retrace stories of artists who have once lived and worked in the south west part Britaint. Starting with Ithell Colquhoun, exploring the Merry Maidens of Boleigh in Lamorna as well as reflecting on Gluck’s Flora’s Cloak. Heading down to Rowena Cade’s Minack Theatre, and thinking about the correlation between fine art and dramatic arts, also considering Barbara Hepworth’s designs for theatre and opera.

Also looking directly at the history of the Porthmeor studios, including studio 5, St Ives Painting reflects on the work of  Ben Nicholson, Patrick Heron, Wilhelmina Barns-Graham, and Lubaina Himid.
